Scorpion National Championships 2019: Top Youth Combo, Chloe Willars & John Tailby, Notts. County SC

With a combined age of less than 36 years, this year’s worthy winners of the Youth Combo ‘Wet-As-‘Ell’ Tankard are Chloe Willars and John Tailby sailing Scorpion 2002 ‘Silverballs’. Unfazed by neither the competition or the conditions, this up and coming pairing recorded two Top 15 finishes to place 23rd overall.

Chloe did her first Scorpion nationals at Lyme Regis in 2015 aged 13 sailing Scorpion 1920 and winning the Crew’s Race at the first attempt. Teaming up with mum Nicola at Looe 2016 she helmed Scorpion 2002 throughout some very challenging conditions and has never really looked back. John started sailing Lasers in 2016 but switched to the Scorpion in 2017 after a commendable home restoration project. He helmed the Scorpion Association boat 1797 at Tenby 2018 with George Backus crewing and they successfully completed every race. John says that he prefers crewing the Scorpion rather than helming but has demonstrated solid proficiency at either end of the boat.

NB. Penzance 2020 – will John take his Hornet, stick with the Scorpion or take both to be on the safe side?
