Pre-Nationals Information for 56th Scorpion National Championships at Looe 2016

National Scorpion Association – 56th National Championship at Looe 2016
Pre-event Information: IMPORTANT PLEASE READ.
This year’s National Championship is just over 4 weeks away at Looe. Looe sailing club are really looking forward to hosting the Scorpion class. They have lots of experience of running National Championships and we have always had a great time in the past.
The PRO is experienced and friendly! We will be having daily meetings with him and our fleet reps to provide feedback and ensure the best possible racing for the class.
Arrival: The arrival procedure is detailed at the end of the NOR, please read it. Looe is a busy seaside resort and negotiating the holiday makers can be a challenge, especially this year as Looe Carnival week parade is on Saturday eve. This means that the road down to the seafront will be closed between 1845 and 2030, so please bear this in mind. If you are arriving before Saturday morning or after 6pm on Saturday there is a phone number for you to call, also camper vans need special assistance and should call ahead. NOR’s can be found on the class website www.sailscorpion.co.uk under the Nationals 2016 tab at the top on the left of the home page.
Car Parking: Is not free in Looe. The nearest Car park is over the bridge into West Looe in The Millpool Car Park, turning right soon after the amusement arcade. You can purchase a weekly ticket for £38.50 if purchased via www.phoneandpay.co.uk or you can get a rover ticket for £47.00 which will allow you to park in most Cornwall Council car parks from www.cornwall.gov.uk
Registration: Registration will be available on Saturday from 0900- 1700 and 0900-1100 on Sunday in Looe Sailing Club and will be manned by the Scorpion Committee who will be friendly and smiley as always!
You will need a valid measurement certificate for the boat you are sailing. Valid means that it needs to be in the current owner’s name (if you are borrowing the boat please ensure that you bring a letter from the owner saying that you have permission to use their boat) and have a 2016 validation sticker attached to it for this year. This would have been provided to you by the Membership Secretary when you paid this year’s fee – if you have not yet received your pack please check that you have paid the correct fee on webcollect in the first instance. If you have paid but not yet received your pack you will be able to collect it at registration from the Membership Secretary. Your measurement certificate will also need to have the Buoyancy Endorsement section completed (prior to the event preferably) to comply with Class Rules, i.e. self-signed and countersigned by a club official at your club, fleet captain or a NSA Committee Member. PHOTOCOPIES of Measurement Certificates won’t be accepted – if you need a replacement certificate or need to register it in your name you can do this on-line on the RYA website prior to the Nationals so please check that your certificate is correct NOW! (Log onto the RYA website at www.rya.org.uk, login into ‘your account’ (tab top right), click on ‘measurement certificate’ on the left side banner and follow the on screen instructions. Once you have paid their fee you will be sent your new certificate by PDF file which you can download and print).
Insurance: It is your responsibility to ensure that your boat is insured to the correct level, we suggest you bring your insurance details with you – you won’t be required to produce these but you will be required to sign the declaration to say that you have the correct cover.
Boat Measurement: Only boats registered as new this year will be required to ‘weigh in’, so you can go ahead and put your mast up / rig on arrival.
Sail Numbers: Please ensure that all sail numbers are correct and match the boat hog number. Different sail numbers will only be allowed in extenuating circumstances and when permission is sought in writing.
The Racing: There is no racing on Saturday but on Sunday there will be a practice race and 1 Championship race. There will be 10 races in total, plus the crew’s race, which will be the first race of the day on Monday followed by 2 Championship races. The rest of the week will generally follow a 2 race day pattern but this may change depending on weather conditions and lost days. The first discard will be after race 5 and the second after race 9. See the NOR’s for more race information.
Boat wash down: There will be no hose pipes available for wash down at Looe but there is a tap so if you want to wash down please bring your own bucket and sponge.
Nationals Clothing: Nationals clothing in the form of T-shirts and Hoodies are available this year with a very snazzy design by our resident designer Hannah Edge (thanks Hannah!). Social Programme:
The Fancy Dress theme this year is FILMS (only so Jock can come as Jack Sparrow and wade across the harbour at low tide at midnight in a ghostly fashion!)
We have the usual infamous Denchfield quiz and a Cornish sing a long, Yatesy start tuning up now!
This year is very special as it’s the 50th Scorpion Nationals for John and Carol Haines, so we are having a Haines tribute night, everyone must come dressed up as one of them and the whole evening will be dedicated to them with various tributes.
The bar prices are the cheapest in Looe and the bar will be open until 11.45pm every night, and on that most important point, I will say on behalf of the Committee have a great event and we will see you there!
If you have any questions about the nationals in general please contact Linda on nationals@sailscoprion.co.uk, anything to do with measurement, class rules, clothing on AGM contact Jo on membership@sailscorpion.co.uk
