Training Day @ Notts County
Eight boats, including visitors from Staunton Harold, were treated to a full on day of Tuning, Tactics and Boat Control training session from multiple times National Champion Tom Jeffcoate and Silver Scorpion Winner ’14 & ’15 Pete Gray on a warm and breezy day in April.
The day started with a tactics talk in the clubhouse, which was then followed by a shore based walk through of the different sail controls – who knew we needed to use quite so much kicker on the beat?!
A couple of swims, 6 toe strap breakages (yes, 6!!), and a broken thwart did not deter the eager participants as they tackled tacking and gybing on the whistle following Pete and Tom in their plastic tub as safety boat Pioneer was affectionately renamed.
Boat on Boat session showing the difference a little kicker here, and outhaul there can make to a boat’s performance, set us up nicely for one of Pauline’s legendary carb loaded lunches.
The afternoon saw a couple of short races, with new pairing Tony Dunsworth and John Wells in 1929 jostling for the lead with Dave Snutch and Sue Barnes in 2000, and Scorpion Rookies Eleanor and Jim all over them like a rash in Good Vibrations.
Massive thanks were given to Tom and Pete for dedicating their Saturday to us, we look forward to putting our newly learned skills and tips to the test
at the Notts County Scorpion Open on 7th and 8th May 2016.
