Barry Dodds
Sadly, Barry Dodds passed away on Saturday 9th April, from prostate cancer.
He slipped away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Valerie and his son’s Simon & Richard.
Barry was previously Chairman of the Scorpion Association & a very keen Scorpion sailer for many years, helping to organise many National Championships.
It is Barry and his family who are responsible for the Bavasiri named boats, named using the first two letters of his families first names (BArry, VAlerie, SImon, RIchard)
He sailed 1867 and when he sold that boat he bought 1942 in fact he still had his boat..!!
He was commodore of the Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club in the 80’s and a RYA Coach & Senior Instructor for many years, running training course for young and old at Hythe and was also the South East Regional Training Coordinator for a number of years.
He was still battling the cancer, by helping out as Race Officer at Hythe, until the end of last year!!
My brother, Simon Dodds, crewed the winning boat at the Scorpion Nationals in 1984, whilst my Dad was working overseas.
For information, a Thanksgiving service will be held at St Leonard’s church, Hythe, Kent at 15.30 on Tuesday 3rd May.

Sorry to hear this remember him from all the nationals.
So sad I sailed with Barry Dodds through most of the 90’s as his no1 crew and can remember rocking up to John Turners to collect the brand new Scorpion 1942, it was an exciting time for us. We sailed that boat everywhere and even now living in New Zealand I have very fond memories of the Scorpion and Barry Dodds for teaching me how to sail one well.
