Chris Turner & Alex Hayman win @ Castle Cove

The view from third place written by Quackers (2022)
15 of my Scorpion pals made the trip to Castle Cove for the last event on the Silver Scorpion Calender.
We launched after eating some of Alan Richie’s picnic ready for 2 races in a building 15 knots of breeze. We were the second start of the day behind some super fast Musto Skiffs. The first start was very busy and the not so friendly Big Bad Wolf (Barry Wolfenden & Catherine Maguire) did his best cow boy impression to scare everyone off the start line. However Discreet Banana (Chris Turner and Alex Hayman) and my twin Blue Steal (Ryan and Hannah Buchanan) managed to get away to take first and second place with me Quackers (Pete Gray and Rach Rhodes) pulling through to third on the last reach.
Race 2 and the wind increased to gusts of 23 knots. This was not so good for me with my light weight crew in the front as we had to drop the kite on the reaches and stop for a little rest at the leeward mark. However my mates in Discreet Banana and Blue Steal
sailed off to take first and second again with Intoxicated (Tim Parsons and Mike Hanan) showing their upwind speed to take third.
Whilst I was given a wash down and put to bed the helms and crews went off to the bar to watch the rugby and play bar games! Some of the helms even put on their best Disco shirts ready for Rendezvous! The scorpions came out on top in the plank walking game as we showed the musto skiffs that team work is much better than sailing on your own!
When my cover came off on Sunday morning it was a lot windier than the 12 knots the race officer told me, so it was on with the flatner and off to the start line we blasted ready for 3 big races. Team discreet Banana and Blue steal relished in these conditions again to take first and second by not reaching off like a musto skiff on the runs. This time the Big Bag Wolf took the third place spot.
With the breeze dropping off a bit for races 4 and 5 and first and second places being pretty much decided the battle was on for third place and the prize of writting this report.Team Big Bad Wolf launched their attack with two second places in race 4 and race 5 but with the wind dropping enough in the final race I managed to take a race win to clinch third place.
Well done to Discreet Bananas Chris and Alex who dominated the event and to Blue Steals Ryan and Hannah who were a very strong second. A big thank you has to go to Popsey and Ice on Fire ( Rob and Sandra Smith) for cooking and putting up most of the fleet over the weekend. I know I cant wait to return for the Nationals here in 2017!
Also we were lucky enough to have photographer Tim Olin capturing our best moments. He will be putting pictures up on his website www.olinphoto.co.uk.
